Meet Dr. Henry Tazelaar

Leading the IAP into a New Era

We are proud to introduce Dr. Henry Tazelaar as the current President of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). Representing the United States and Canadian Division, Dr. Tazelaar brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and scholarly excellence to the role.

Dr. Tazelaar previously served as Treasurer of the IAP, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening the organization’s financial stewardship and strategic planning. His longstanding commitment to the IAP and its mission makes him an ideal leader for this next chapter.

A distinguished pathologist, Dr. Tazelaar is the Geraldine Zeiler Colby Professor of Cytopathology and former Chair of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic Arizona. He completed his residency and fellowships in surgical pathology and cardiopulmonary transplant pathology at Stanford University Medical Center, and has authored over 355 peer-reviewed publications and three textbooks.

His research interests span:

  • Heart and lung transplantation pathology
  • Neoplastic and non-neoplastic cardiopulmonary diseases
  • Pleural disease
  • Granulomatous lung conditions
  • Systemic disease involvement in the lungs

Dr. Tazelaar has also served as President of the Pulmonary Pathology Society, and continues to contribute to the field through his role as Chair of the IAP Foundation Committee.

With his deep expertise and global perspective, Dr. Tazelaar is poised to lead the IAP in advancing pathology education, research, and collaboration worldwide.
